Toyota forced to halt vehicle production due to a Ransomware Attack

The Japanese plants of Toyota Motor Corp. halted production on Tuesday after a key supplier’s computer systems were shut down due to a cyberattack, the latest setback in the automaker’s efforts to make up for missed production earlier this year. According to Nikkei, car manufacturing has been paused at all of Toyota’s Japanese operations as a result of this cyberattack. “Due to a system failure at a domestic supplier (Kojima Industries Corporation), we have decided to suspend the operation of 28 lines at 14 plants in Japan on Tuesday, March 1st,” Toyota announced on its worldwide website.

The Japanese car giant has revealed that one of its central suppliers Kojima Industries Corporation, which supplies plastic parts, had been affected by the attack. According to NTV News, the attack on Kojima Industries occurred on Saturday, and the company’s servers were taken down on Sunday.

Toyota subsidiaries Hino Motors and Daihatsu Motor are also impacted. The Japanese automaker sold 10.5 million vehicles, becoming the world’s largest manufacturer for the second year in a row. Whatever may be the reason for the mishap, it is expected that Toyota would be unable to manufacture 13,000 cars each day for the time being. The firm has promised to resume manufacturing as soon as feasible.
