How to Become a Cloud Consultant?

How to become Cloud Consultant

Cloud computing, like the Covid-19 virus, is all around these days, but in a good way. Expertise is in short supply for companies looking to take advantage of the cloud. To fill the void, plenty of cloud consulting companies have sprung up in recent years.

How to Become a Cloud Consultant?

What is Cloud Consulting?

Cloud consulting is a service that assists you in choosing the right cloud solutions that will integrate seamlessly and have the best return on investment in technology. Usually, a consultant assists their clients in deciding on a cloud plan. They work together to decide which applications or workloads are suitable for running in the cloud rather than on-premises. The consultant then takes on the challenge of cloud migration, also known as transferring on-premises resources to a cloud platform. A cloud consultant can also provide managed services to ensure the smooth operation of cloud workloads. For several consultants, optimizing the expense and efficiency of cloud workloads has become a core service.

What is Cloud Consulting

Skills of a Cloud Consultant

Leadership, confidence, written and verbal communication, listening, and relationship building were once required skills to become a successful consultant. A consultant could settle in and coast on their established expertise until they mastered their industry and platform-specific skills. They’d also have to keep up to date on IT news and updates. However, the major part of the work remained reasonably constant from one project to the other. The situation has changed now. It’s no longer about prior knowledge or experience.

The pace of innovation has intensified, and many industries are constantly being developed, disrupted, or even removed. There is one talent that stands out above the rest in this ever-changing world. It’s the one skill that sets top performers apart from those who are barely keeping up. A consultant must learn to quickly find and actualize new knowledge from a variety of sources, then implement their learnings in real-time. Consultants who try to coast, relying on their current skills and abilities, will be left behind. In the series “Game of Thrones”, the Stark girl gave up her name and identity in order to learn from the Many-Faced God. So, you now know that the ability to learn is the most important asset.

The cloud consulting career

In order to build your career in Cloud consulting, you must first have a bachelor’s degree ideally in computer science, information technology, or engineering as it’s a basic requirement. Then we have various certifications that set a consultant apart when organizations are looking to employ one. If a cloud consultant takes a business management course, it is a plus for him because it will better prepare him to take on the consulting job. The degree, certifications, and courses will also ensure increased wages. To differentiate themselves from competitors, cloud consulting companies often try to advertise the number of workers who hold cloud certifications.

Now we know what cloud consulting is, the most important skill needed for it, and what a consultant does. The crucial question that arises here is, how to become a cloud consultant? There is no particular certification for a cloud consultant but it is a designation you earn after gaining some knowledge, skills and completing a couple of certifications.

How to be Cloud Consultant

  1. Basic Knowledge of Networking: In order to become a cloud consultant, one must have a basic understanding of Networking because Networking is the backbone of Cloud computing. Cloud is all about virtualization and the concept of virtualization pretty much depends on Networking. It is the first step that must be taken to learn cloud computing because the understanding of Networks will make it easy to manage, scale, and secure your Cloud.
  2. Basic Knowledge of Windows and Linux Operating System: It is important to have a working experience in Linux and Windows operating systems because the most popular cloud service providers like AWS, Azure, and GCP majorly use Linux and Windows. You must have knowledge of the latest version of the Windows operating system and Ubuntu, Fedora, and Debian for the Linux operating system.
  3. Basic Knowledge of Programming: Having expertise in programming will help individuals in creating, hosting, and managing applications on Cloud platforms. It is a bonus that facilitates communication with the available third-party resources and applications.
  4. One Cloud Platform: You need to learn at least one cloud platform. There are many cloud platforms in the market. The most popular ones are AWS (Amazon Web Services), Microsoft Azure, and GCP (Google Cloud Platform). You can choose one of the above or any other. You can choose to train in any cloud platform and get certified.
  5. Architect Certification: Once you have acquired a basic understanding of one of the cloud platforms, you must have its architecture knowledge as well. If you choose AWS then you’ll have to complete the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate certification and AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional certification to become AWS Certified Solutions Architect. If you choose Microsoft Azure then you’ll have to complete the AZ-303 / AZ-300 Microsoft Azure Architect Technologies certification and the AZ-304/AZ-301 Microsoft Azure Architect Design certification to become an Azure Certified Solutions Architect. You can also choose an equivalent certification from any other Cloud service provider.
  6. Build a Project: This is a very essential part of self-learning. Now that you have a knowledge of networking, Windows and Linux operating systems, programming, cloud basics, and cloud architecture, you must build a project on your own. It can be a small project but it will help you a lot.
