In order to examine whether the NSO Group’s National Government utilized the “Pegasus” spyware on its citizens, the Indian Supreme Court took the extraordinary step of establishing a technical committee.
The Wire newsletter presented proof that Pegasus had been used to target journalists and opposition leaders, and Amnesty’s stories shared their evidence with the Indian newsletter The Wire. Indian IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw refused to employ spyware illegally and stressed that an appropriate process is followed when it is utilized.
The issue of Pegasus has been troubling India’s government ever since, with several lawsuits seeking out how much government spyware is being used, and if it is constitutional.
The Supreme Court of India ordered a commission of inquiry to be set up yesterday.
A court’s decision was based on the belief that spyware is an abuse of the rights to privacy and freedom of speech. The Court is concerned about the possibility that a foreign entity may use spyware. Public interest is also a factor.
