Five members of a ransomware gang that attacked over 50 companies across Europe and the United States have been apprehended by Ukrainian authorities. The group’s head, a 36-year-old Kyiv resident, and his wife, along with three associates, were among those arrested earlier this week.
Officials said the organization hacked into private and government enterprise networks to steal sensitive data, then installed ransomware to gain revenue from the victims, as well as launched DDoS attacks to bring the networks to a halt.
Some of the hackers’ gains were also transferred to payment cards controlled by fictional people using underground money mule networks.
The individuals were apprehended earlier last week after residential searches were conducted in nine different locations. The raids were carried out in collaboration with agents from the US and UK law enforcement authorities.
